STATEMENT

Born in Colorado, I spent much of my life in the mountains training as a professional distance runner before retiring from sport and taking up my true passion of painting. My paintings are usually the end result of a two part process. First, I stumble upon a new idea for a picture, usually while running. Then a series of experiments in the studio steer the work in other directions. Thus, my work is always informed by the physical experience of moving through a landscape, and then altered by my search for novel ways to apply paint. In this new body of work I reconnect with my interest in the combination of patterns, geometric shapes and organic plant forms. I present these images in a collaged composition, like jumbled snapshots of incongruous memories. Atmospheric depths contrast with flat silhouettes of plants and geometric forms that alternately clash and harmonize, in a formal way alluding to the conflict between human efforts and the natural world. Each panel in a given piece has a logic all its own, which may contrast or compliment its neighboring panel. I find equal inspiration in the unadulterated natural world and the seductive beauty of modern design. At the heart of these paintings is a reverence for environment, both natural and manmade.
